The Breed Today, The Breed Tomorrow
Red Brangus cattle offer many qualities that distinguish the breed from other cattle breeds. Their unique characteristics make them the ideal breed for tropical and subtropical climates. Breed characteristics include but are not limited to:
The red color of Red Brangus cattle provides three distinct advantages. First, red is the most popular color of cattle breeds worldwide. The Red Brangus breed provides consistency and uniformity of color to any crossbreeding system. Second, red is more heat tolerant than black and provides greater resistance to pinkeye and udder sun damage. Third, the red gene always breeds true red, even if the calf’s hide is black. This is important when breeding Red Brangus cattle to non-red colored cattle.
Temperament is an important factor in any cattle operation. Disposition was a primary concern in the development of Red Brangus cattle. For the full time rancher or part time weekend rancher, administration of vaccinations and general cattle maintenance is accomplished with safety of the cattle and safety for the rancher.
Early breed maturity results in more calf production per cow lifespan. Bulls mature by two years of age and are ready to go into service by 18 months. Heifers are ready to breed by 14 months of age and deliver their first calf at 24 months of age. The bulls can remain in service through age 12, while the cows can produce calves beyond the age of 14. The end result is a more efficient cattle operation that leads to increased profits.
Mature Red Brangus bulls generally weigh between 1,800 and 2,000 pounds, while mature females generally weigh around 1,100 to 1,200 pounds.
Cross breeding Red Brangus cattle with almost any other breed provides an automatic jump of 10 to 15%. Selection for high performing bloodlines can result in an extra 100 pounds per calf or more. Heifer calves stand beside their steer mates with outstanding post weaning performance in the feedyard.
Red Brangus cattle excel on pasture and in the feedyard. Feedyard cattle consistently convert feed at a 5.5 to 1 ratio with over 70% grading choice.
